Food Sensitivity Testing
Today's #feelgoodfriday is about food sensitivity testing!
Food sensitivities are a contraversial topic among physicians, but there is a growing body of research demonstrating that they are in fact real. Something they are not, is food allergies (but that is a whole different blog post!).
It all begins with your immune system producing something called antibodies (IgG to be specific) to certain foods you are eating. When these antibodies bind to pieces of the food (called antigens), they form something called immune complexes.
When too many of these immune complexes build up, your body can no longer get rid of them and you end up with inflammation. This inflammation can cause a wide variety of symptoms, including digestive disturbances, joint pain, headaches, weight gain and more!
Food Sensitivity Testing
Testing for food sensitivities is an easy task - it involves an appointment with me, doing a finger poke to receive a blood sample, and then within four weeks you will know which foods your body is reacting to!
Research on testing demonstrates significant symptom reduction upon removing the offending foods, and symptom return when reactive foods are added back to the diet too quickly. Luckily, there is lots that Naturopathic doctors can do to help you decrease the inflammation and get your body get to a place where you can hopefully reintroduce them!

Symptom Management - The Evidence
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) like symptoms:
- Patients with IBS symptoms who removed the foods they were sensitive to based on an IgG food sensitivity test reported significantly improved symptoms upon eliminating these foods! This means decreased bloating, more regular bowel movements, and decreased abdominal cramping! 💩
- Most people don’t associated migraine headaches with what you eat - and although there are many factors contributing to these awful headaches, food sensitivities could be one of those factors. In various studies, eliminating food sensitivities demonstrated decreased frequency of migraines, and also decreased need for medications for pain relief!
- One study demonstrated that obese children had more IgG food sensitivities than children of normal weight. Another study demonstrated that by eliminating food sensitivities allowed participants to loose one pound per week on average.
